North America's Largest Freighter at Long Beach Port

Nearly a football field wide, the Switzerland-based container ship is in town until Monday.

The Port of Long Beach all weekend is hosting the largest container ship ever to make a call in North America. So how big is the new ship in town?

Well, when people describe cargo ships as "floating cities," Fabiola qualifies.

The 1,200-foot-long MSC Fabiola -- from China's Port of Yantian -- is more than one-fifth of a mile long and more than half a football field wide. It has the capacity to carry more than 12,000 container units, the Port of Long Beach announced Friday.

Until the vessel's most recent trip to Long Beach, the Fabiola made Asia-to- Europe runs since its 2010 launch. The giant ship is operated by the Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Co.

It is scheduled to be unloaded and reloaded this weekend and to depart Long Beach Monday, said Port spokesman Art Wong, also the source of its being the biggest to visit North America.
