No Sign on Belmont Shore Beaches of the Diesel Spill in Port

The 700 gallons has thus far been contained with booms as crews work to clean it up.

About 700 gallons of diesel fuel gushed into Long Beach harbor at the Tesoro Terminal in what's known as Channel Two, and efforts were under way Tuesday afternoon to clean it up, authorities said.

"It's contained within the area of the port and up in what we call Channel No. 2, in Berth 84A," said Lexia Retallack, spokesperson with the California Department of Fish and Game, which oversees the environmental aspects. "We haven't seen anytihing hit the beaches of course we keep an eye out."

The spill at Berth 84A occurred during an internal transfer from the tanker Aljalaa about 7:30 p.m. Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard reported. The spill was surrounded by about 5,000 feet of floating booms to contain it, while crews figured out how to suck or sop it up. The Coast Guard, the California Department of Fish and Game, and the vessel's emergency response management company -- O'Brien's Response Management -- established a unified command, and cleanup efforts began. No wildlife problems were reported. Anyone seeing wildlife covered in oil was urged to call (877) 823-6926.
