Man Fishing for Sand Bass Hooks Man-Size Shark

Angler on a charter boat off Southern California Coast landed a hefty mako after the shark chomped on his hooked fish.

A fisherman on the day charter boat Enterprise was thrilled when he started catching sand bass Wednesday. But when Blake Hon hooked what seemed like a pretty large one, a fight was on.

It seems Hon hooked a sand bass, alright. But a giant mako shark wanted it, too, and gobbled Hon's fish--and Hon's hook, as Patch contributor Philip Friedman reported.

The #2 hook was fine for the day's bait, anchovies, and the 15-pound test was adquate for the sand bass, blogger Friedman wrote. But both were overpowered by what Friedman called the "mammoth" shark.

Read more about how the shark off of Huntington Beach was landed on the deck of the Long Beach Marina sportfishing boat, at Philip Friedman Outdoors.
