Are you a car gazer, a car ogler? While Second Street closes to accommodate an influx of hundreds of vehicles, it will open to another kind of traffic--thousands of spectators from all over the state descend on the commercial strip for the 23rd Annual Belmont Shore Car Show Sunday.
About 700 classic cars will become temporary fixtures as various makes and models from 1975 or earlier are showcased--including roadsters, convertibles, hot rods and low-riders, which have evolved from comparatively spare designs of the Barris Brothers nearly a century ago to a modern artistry of hydraulic hopping.
Displays of customized vehicles blending style and function will be shown along alongside limited editions and one-of-a-kind cars in one of the largest exhibitions of its kind, according to the web site of this year’s host, the Belmont Shore Business Association.
The free event has drawn as many as 50,000 enthusiasts in the past and has risen more than $300,000 for charities, according to the Bay City Rodders. A car club based out of Seal Beach, the Bay City Rodders produce the annual car show each year and donate 100 percent of the proceeds.
Second Street will close for 14 blocks along East Second Street from Bayshore to Livingston avenues, while 12-hour closures will shut down intersecting side streets from Quincy to Claremont avenues from 5 a.m.-5 p.m.
