Get Out: Five Ideas For Your Weekend

Zombies like brains, we like food trucks, and everyone loves weddings this weekend.

From dragsters revving their engines to zombies dragging themselves around on the big screen, this weekend is remarkably diverse. Note that three events are totally free. Brains for everyone!

Our goal is to make the Get Out planner as reliable as possible, but keep in mind, some events change at the last minute. We advise calling ahead just in case.

When/Where: 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. this Sunday at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, 6200 E. Atherton St., Long Beach

Why Go: This musical set in 1985 is based on the Adam Sandler film of the same name. Root for Robbie as he tries to find the kind of love they sing about. Performances are Thursday-Sunday July 8-24.

When/Where: 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m this Saturday at Rainbow Lagoon Park, along Shoreline Drive between Pine and Linden Avenues in Long Beach

Why Go: Imagine a place where all of So Cal's best gourmet food trucks came together at once. You're not dreaming, it's the LB Street Food Fest! Trucks like Bacon Mania, Greenz on Wheelz, Nom Noma, Auntie's Fry Bread and Sweets Truck will all be there. Bring a picnic blanket and some beach chairs and enjoy the live music while you eat. Net proceeds of this event will benefit some great programs.

Pricing: $7 prepaid online, $9 at the door, bring a nonperishable food item for $1 off the ticket price

When/Where: 11 a.m. this Saturday at Art Theatre Long Beach, 2025 E. 4th St., Long Beach

Why Go: Local independent filmmaker Ren Blood (real name) has adapted her popular zombie comic into a film. Come see the film for free and enjoy a Q&A session with the filmmaker. Note that this is an 11 a.m. showing, not 11 p.m.

When/Where: 3 p.m.-9 p.m. this Saturday at East Carson Street and Atlantic Avenue, Long Beach

Why Go: Located less than four miles from the legendary Lions Drag Strip, which operated from 1955-1972, the Bixby Knolls Dragster Expo and Car Show features more than 200 classic and specialty cars in multiple award categories. See many of the famous cars and drivers from the Lions Drag Strip era along with award-winning racing boats and race cars featured in the Long Beach Grand Prix.

When/Where: Festivities begin at 2:30 p.m., show starts at 5:30 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday at Bixby Park, Cherry Avenue and East Ocean Boulevard, Long Beach

Why Go: Festivities at the Long Beach Shakespeare Festival begin at 2 p.m. with live music, dancing, puppet and bird shows, beautifully-costumed characters, old-fashioned children's games and face painting. This year's selected Shakespeare work is "The Merry Wives of Windsor." Performances begin at 5:30 p.m. Bring a picnic, blankets and low-back chairs and come celebrate The Bard this summer. The festival runs Saturdays and Sundays through July 31.
