Friday's Global PARK(ing) Day on 4th Street

Bike to Retro Row or East Village areas of 4th Street for cycle perks, and other green-minded fun.

The 4th Street Business Association, in collaboration with Fingerprints Records and Green Octopus Consulting, will be showcasing urban spaces and ‘green’ activities in and around the 4th Street/Retro Row corridor for this year’s annual global PARK(ing) Day event on Friday.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces, or temporary public places. The mission is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban life. This year’s outreach has expanded to include 4th street and across town including downtown, Cal State Long Beach, Bixby Knolls and in the East Village.

Some of the event highlights being held from 11am to 2pm will include: a sustainable learning center in the Edsel lot at 4th and Cherry; lush park-like settings with an outside reading room and dining area out front of merchants at 2226 E. 4th and Number Nine, 2118 E; and an afternoon music concert hosted by Fingerprints Records and Berlin by Portfolio at 4th and Elm.

As biking is a big part of this event, attendees are encouraged to ride bikes between locations. Green Octopus Consulting has organized the following bike offerings: bicycle parking available at all PARK(ing) Day
locations; free California Bicycling Street Smarts booklets for bicyclists at most locations; a Bike Oasis at Bixby Knolls’ new bike shop: free air, safety checks, and more.

Visit the map at parkingday.org and click on “Long Beach” to see all the happenings in the area, or for more information about 4th Street’s Park(ing) Day, see www.facebook.com/4thStreetLB.
