Update: Woman Killed in Long Beach Hit-and-Run

By Nancy Wride

A Long Beach woman was killed Wednesday in a four-car collision caused by an alleged hit-and-run driver, who was later arrested at nearby Long Beach City College, police said.

The victim was identified by police as Elane Logay, 47. Another of the drivers who was not named was hospitalized with moderate injuries, the Long Beach Police Department said in a press announcement.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that 21-year-old Mario Palafox of Bellflower was driving a 1992 Lexus westbound on Carson Street and at a high rate of speed, when he collided with three vehicles stopped in the left turn bay of westbound Carson Street, said Sgt. Aaron Eaton of the Long Beach Police Department.

It was about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday when Logay was at the back end of the three-car line at Carson and Clark Avenue outside Long Beach City College in a 1985 Toyota Supra, police said. They said her car was smashed forward into a 2005 Scion TC; the Scion then plowed into a 2007 Ford Mustang, police said. Logay "was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained by the impact," the department added.

Palafox ran from the crash but police set up a perimeter and after a search found him on the college campus, where he was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, felony hit and run, and for being an unlicensed driver. He was then hospitalized for what police called moderate injuries.
