Suja Lowenthal Announces Her Bid to Become Long Beach Mayor

Long Beach City Council Member Suja Lowenthal on Tuesday announced that she'll be running for mayor of this port city of 50 square miles and 462,000 residents.

The second-term representative of Long Beach's Second District, a former vice mayor and past president of the Long Beach School Board that governs LBUSD, joins Council members Gerrie Schipske and Robert Garcia as more prominent candidates for the April 2014 election.

Schipske declared her mayoral bid first among the Council members. Garcia announced a day after Mayor Bob Foster revealed that he will not seek a third term.

According to the Press Telegram's Eric Bradley, others with mayoral campaigns are: "Damon Dunn, a businessman and former NFL player; Long Beach City College Trustee Doug Otto and Jana Shields, a linguist, treasurer of the Willmore City Heritage Association and past 1st Council District candidate."
