Two Earthquakes Strike Offshore

By Nicole Mooradian

A magnitude-4.0 earthquake struck offshore north of Long Beach and about six miles south of the Palos Verdes Peninsula Wednesday afternoon and was followed about two hours later by a magnitude-2.0 aftershock in the same general area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The epicenters of both quakes, at about 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., were less than a mile under the earth's surface in the San Pedro Channel.

Within 20 minutes, more than 450 people in 69 ZIP codes reported feeling the first temblor, according to the USGS Community Internet Intensity Map. Weak shaking was felt primarily along the coast from Thousand Oaks down to Dana Point.

Nobody reported feeling the aftershock.

No damage or injuries were reported, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. A representative of Southern California Edison said that no power outages had been reported.

The first earthquake was initially measured with a magnitude of 3.9 by an automated system. It was upgraded shortly after to a 4.0.
