Alleged Long Beach Hit-Run Driver to be Charged Today

A driver arrested for causing a fatal, four-car crash outside Long Beach City College and then fleeing the scene will be formally charged Tuesday with felonies at the Long Beach courthouse.

Arraignment is scheduled today for a Bellflower man charged with vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of a fatal accident in Long Beach on Wednesday.

Mario Palafox, 21, allegedly was driving a 1992 Lexus west on Carson Street about 11:15 a.m. when it collided with three cars stopped in the left turn lane, fatally injuring Elane Logay, 47, of Long Beach, according to Long Beach police and a coroner's spokesperson.

The Lexus struck a 1985 Toyota Supra, which hit a 2005 Scion TC that struck a 2007 Ford Mustang, police said. Logay, who was in the Toyota, died on the spot, police said.

Palafox ran from the wreck and was arrested about 45 minutes later on the Long Beach City College campus, police said. He was booked on suspicion of vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run and being an unlicensed driver, police said at the time.
