A Secret Garden in Long Beach

Long Beach's Secret Garden

Near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Second Street there is a Long Beach version of a Secret Garden.  Those who drive by this area, or stop to shop, never guess the hidden treasures of our very own Secret Garden.

To me, the wetlands adjacent to the Market Place Shopping Center just seemed patches of dirt and bushes.  Then I took a guided tour of the area. I learned about and saw the plants and animals that thrive in these wetlands.  I learned how humans have impacted the wetlands and ways that we are coexisting with the wetlands.

Take advantage of a free walk in the Market Place Marsh on Saturday, May 5th from 8 to 10 a.m.  The hike is guided by ecologists and is appropriate for all ages.  You’ll learn about the many creatures that rely on this habitat for their survival.  On previous walks I have seen herons, sea eagles, kingfishers, hummingbirds, rabbits and a coyote.  I learned how development has changed this landscape.  I learned how we are finding ways to coexist with the wetlands.  I learned about hopes for the future of the wetlands.
