See Cinderella’s New Moves at the Terrace Theater

On old classic gets a new twist in commemoration of Long Beach Ballet's 30th Anniversary during the last weekend of October.

More than six decades after Disney’s movie moved audiences around the world, the story of Cinderella is getting a makeover not from her Fairy Grandmother, but from the Classical Ballet of Guangzhou at the Long Beach Terrace Theater Oct. 26 and 27.

It’s makeover that began years ago when David Wilcox, artistic director for the Long Beach Ballet, first choreographed his re-telling of the classic fairytale specifically for the Chinese-based ballet company back in 2005, according to the theater.

His new rendition is set to grace the stage in a celebration of the the Long Beach Ballet’s 30th Anniversary in two performances: an 8 p.m. show Saturday, followed by a 2 p.m. show Sunday.

With Halloween just around the corner, it's a fitting time to debut the tale of a girl who rides to her ball in a giant pumpkin.

Offering a sampling of Chinese culture, the Guangzhou-based ballet is also set to perform a short, Saturday showing of two dances entitled, Butterfly Lovers and Yellow River, at 2 p.m.

The two ballet companies seperated by thousands of miles of oceans and continents have shared strong cultural ties since 1999, when Wilcox’s production of another classic tale, the Nutcracker, became one of the award-winning Classical Ballet of Guangzhou’s bigget hits.

Wilcox also headed the Chinese ballet company’s first international tour, and they in turn played host to the “U.S. Ambasadors to China” tour. The three-week long affair drew 40 American ballet students to a slew of performances spanning the expansive country and its diverse provinces.

“We are excited to open our stage to the celebrated Classical Ballet of Guangzhou,” said Dan Spellens, Director of Theaters & Entertainment for SMG at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, in a statement.

"We are also delighted to play a part in honoring our friend David Wilcox and the Long Beach Ballet," he said.
