Static Noise: Photo Exhibit Opening

STATIC NOISE: The Photographs of Rhona Bitner, opening January 27, 2012 at University Art Museum, California State University Long Beach, presents West Coast photography and music lovers their first opportunity to view up close the art of New York-based Rhona Bitner. The exhibition features twenty-eight photographs from Bitner’s ongoing LISTEN series, a body of work devoted to the exploration of significant sites in American music history in their present condition—from Electric Lady Studios and CBGB in New York to the Sound Factory and Whisky à Go-Go in Los Angeles.

Accompanied by a brochure with an essay by musician Lenny Kaye, long-time collaborator and guitarist for the Patti Smith Group, and paired with Lou Reed’s immersive Arup Soundlab Installation Metal Machine Trio: The Creation of the Universe in UAM’s special Project Room, Bitner’s sites, stages and studios in STATIC NOISE become atmospheric symbols for the sound and experience of composition, creativity, performance and spectacle.

Artist Rhona Bitner’s photographs have been exhibited internationally and are represented in permanent collectionsincluding those of The Art Institute of Chicago; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Maison Européenne de la Photographie; and the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris. Presently, she is a faculty member at the School of the International Center of Photography in New York. A native New Yorker, Rhona Bitner works in New York and Paris. See RhonaBitner.com.
