Spirit of '45 Celebration

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske will host this Spirit of '45 Celebration. It's one of many around the country commemorating the anniversary of Japan's August 14, 1945 surrender, which ended World War II.

There will be a swing band, dancing and a special visit from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The celebration is part of a promise the Councilwoman made to Edith Shain, the nurse in the famous Times Square kiss photo. She assured her that Long Beach would celebrate Spirit of '45 Day.

There will also be a commemorative wreath on display at Rosie the Riveter Park, at Clark Avenue and Conant Street in Long Beach, next to the former Douglas Plant where many Rosies built B-17s and fighter planes.
