Craft of the Week: Say it With Chalk

If you're beating the heat indoors, this Craft of the Week is art that keeps on giving. (And it's cool easy fun).

Crafts are a great way to exercise your artistic side but they are also very useful at bringing people together. They can be a fun and simple art project for young ones, as well, especially in the heat.

Each week, we will post a simple and easy project for your enjoyment. This is a great opportunity for you to reconnect with your friends and family while enjoying a weekly craft night.

Say It With Chalk Speech Bubble
Chalk speech bubbles are a popular prop for photo ops because they allow you to convey photo messages for any occasion. For example, you can write anything from "Happy Birthday" to "I love you!"

You can use this craft as a permanent fixture in your home for you and your guests to change daily. This craft can also be attached to a stick and used for on-the-go photo expressions.

Use this step-by-step guide to make your own speech bubble, plus a bonus feature on making your own mustache!

What You Need

Step 1
Start with a sturdy foam board. If you have a standard sized presentation board, plan to only use half of it for this project.

Step 2
Sketch a speech bubble on your board. If you are uncomfortable freehanding this part, feel free to print out a speech bubble from your computer and trace it on your board.

Step 3
Use your precision knife to cut out your speech bubble. *This step should be performed carefully by an adult.

Step 4
Using your chalkboard paint, apply at least two coats to your speech bubble. Follow the directions on your specific brand of paint to ensure best quality.

Step 5
Once thoroughly dry, break in your chalkboard by rubbing chalk over the entire surface.

Step 6
Adhere the dowel rod to the back side of the speech bubble using your hot glue.

Step 7
Wipe off the excess chalk and write your desired message.

Alternative Craft: Mustache on a Stick

Not in the mood for paint and chalk? Use the same methods and materials described above to make your own mustache!

Use your precision knife to cut out a mustache from your foam board. The mustache should be at least 3 inches in width. Adhere it to a smaller dowel rod and enjoy!
