May Day: It's Umbrella and Sweater Weather

Forecast calls for rain this morning tapering off to showers this afternoon in Belmont Shore, Naples.

No it’s not Groundhog’s Day again – it’s just May masquerading as February for the next few days.

A storm from the Gulf of Alaska has brought record cold weather and rain and snow along with it. The National Weather Service is predicting cold rain locally through Wednesday night. A half-inch up to 1 inch of rain is expected, and possibly up to 1½ inches on southwest-facing coastal slopes, said weather specialist Bonnie Bartling.

Chilly temperatures on Monday resulted in record lows for the date at Long Beach Airport, UCLA, Lancaster and Sandberg. The Long Beach Airport saw a low of 49, which broke the old record of 50 set in 1964.

Rain this morning gradually shifting to scattered showers this afternoon is what's in store for Belmont Shore, Naples and coastal Long Beach. Highs are forecast in the low-to-mid 60s with winds of around 15 mph this afternoon while lows are epedted to hover in the mid 50s.

The Weather Service predicts snow levels to lower to 5,000 to 5,500 feet, with as much as a few inches of snow possible over the highest mountains.
