LBUSD Grads Have Won $52.5 Million in Scholarships

Long Beach students have been award a record-breaking amount, part of a trend of increased recognition for excellence at Long Beach Unified's schools.

Now that the commencements are over and summer is underway, some good education news to look back upon:

Wilson Classical High School’s 2012 graduating class raked in more than $7 million in scholarships. Wilson was just one of many Long Beach Unified School District high schools contributing to break a district-wide record.

With 950 seniors graduating in June, that averages out to $7,368 per student.

More than $52 million in scholarships awarded throughout the LBUSD, surpassing the previous record set in 2010 by more than $1.1 million.

It’s part of a rising trend that has seen the amount of scholarships awarded increase by 192 percent in the last five years, according to the LBUSD.

Winner of the Broad Prize for Urban Education in 2003-04 and several other merits for improvements in student achievement, the LBUSD has been recognized for excellence many times over, with more students than ever going on to higher education. At Wilson High, 950 diplomas were awarded to graduating seniors this year.

Of the $7,099,637 in scholarships earned by students at Wilson High is $208,000 to USC, a $180,000 Naval ROTC award, $130,000 to UC Berkeley and $88,000 to Whittier College, according to the LBUSD. UCLA, Columbia and Occidental College were also among the top acceptances.

Students throughout the district also received hundreds of additional accolades such as Most Inspiring Student, Rotary Service Above Self, Society of Women Engineers, Congressional Art, National Achievement and National Merit awards, according to the LBUSD.
