CSULB Event Raises $14,500 for Japan Victims

Over 600 hundred people attended the vigil and fundraiser at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden.

 Over 600 hundred people including local dignitaries and diverse community members from Long Beach and beyond attended a Japanese Disaster Relief Fundraiser and Candlelight Vigil at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at California State University, Long Beach on March 27.  

 The event was coordinated and sponsored by the Long Beach Japanese Cultural Center, Interval House, the Long Beach Yokkaichi Sister City Association and the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden on the CSULB campus.

The event raised more than $14,500, which will be donated to the U.S./Japan Council Earthquake Relief Fund, where 100% of the contributions will be directed to medical and rescue efforts in Japan.

 During the ceremony, Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster presented to Consul General of Japan Junichi Ihara 1,000 origami cranes with a wish for peace and healing. Music performances included Yuzan Shirai on the Shakuhachi flute, Yoko Awaya on the Koto Harp and the Long Beach Kokoro Taiko group.
