St. Mary Senior Safety Summit

St. Mary Medical Center announced today that it has partnered with Healthcare Partners and Lifeline Ambulance to host the second annual Injury Prevention & Safety Summit on May 23 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Highlights include free carotid artery stroke screenings in recognition of stroke awareness month, a stroke prevention lecture, and a special demonstration of one of St. Mary’s neuro-stroke robots.

In recognition of Older American’s Month, the following will be offered: Fire Prevention & Safety, Medicare 101, Elder Abuse, Medication Safety, and Heart Care presentations; fall and balance evaluations; Tai Chi and Reiki demonstrations; and meditation exercises. The Breathe Easy Mobile Care Clinic will also be available for respiratory screenings.

Partners in Care (PIC) of the West, a charitable healthcare organization, has teamed with the Medical Center to identify exhibitor participants based on the need of post-acute care in the community. Individuals will have the opportunity to speak directly to vendors who provide services to older adults.

Guest speakers include Dr. Nik Kapoor (heart disease), Dr. Visal Nga (medication safety), Dr. Amar Kapoor (meditation exercises), Lisa Johnson, Nurse Practitioner (stroke prevention), Long Beach Fire Department Ambassadors, and the Medical Reserve Corp.

“As a Los Angeles County designated Level II Trauma Center and Disaster Resource Center, our commitment to the community includes injury prevention to special populations, including older adults,” said Thomas Salerno, St. Mary Medical Center President & CEO. “Education and prevention are critically important. Therefore, our program is packed with helpful talks, screenings, tips, and information focused on the safety and health of our seniors.”
