Exterme MPG: The Hypermiling Challenge

The term motorsports usually styles a race for speed, where vehicles compete against one another to reach the finish line. Given it is the 21st Centry, Mitsubishi Motors North America has decided to give a new meaning by introducing the concept of environmentally-conscious driving by putting on a "race" to see who can achieve the best fuel economy over a designated distance.

The event, titled Extreme MPG: The Hypermiling Challenge, chooses three skilled drivers as they pilot the fiel-efficient 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage across 275 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Cypress, California, to see who guzzles the lease amount of fuel. Mitsubishi Motors North America will make a contribution in the winner's name to the charity of his or her choice. The 2nd and 3rd place finishers will honor a check of $500 each to the selected charity.

The contestants are: Mike Austin from Popular Mechanics, Aaron Fold, automotive editor for about.com and Joni Gray, the current president of the Motor Press Guild.

The event takes place on Wednesday, March 12, with the contestants arriving in Cypress around 4:30 p.m. at 6400 Katella Ave, Cypress, CA 90630. We hope you can be there to cover this exciting event.
