Non-Profits Fund-Raising Success Dependent on the Tides

It’s a new year and for the hundreds of thousands of surfers, boaters and fisherman who often base their social and work calendars on the tides, the first and most critical purchase they will make in 2012 is a tide calendar.

Most surfers will buy a ‘Tidelines’ calendar, either in the form of a wall calendar or a pocket-size tide book, both of which feature the undulating ‘sine’ waves, graphically depicting the ebb and flow of each day’s tides.

John Conover, one of the first board members of the Surfrider Foundation started Tidelines 30 years ago. The calendar is now sold in approximately 75 surf shops and over 1,000 retail outlets.

Conover created Tidelines in 1981, driving up and down both East and West coasts, hitting up every surf and marine supply business.

The grunt work has paid off. Nowadays, over 300,000 Tidelines wall calendars and mini Tidebooks are sold each year.

With his success, Conover wanted to give back to the community. Within the last year, he introduced CalendarLink.org, a custom calendar that non-profits can easily create, using their own photos (or Tideline’s library of thousands of professionally-shot photos, featuring the likes of Surfer’s Journal photo editor Jeff Divine).

Dozens of non-profits, both local and national, such as the California State Lifesaving Association, Rancho Coastal Humane Society, PETA, Smile Train and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, have created and sold their own calendars on their unique custom webpage that CalendarLink provides on their site.

“There are no start-up costs or printing costs involved,” says Conover.

“Non-profits make $10 for every calendar they sell and raise funds from the very first calendar sold since there are no upfront costs," he adds.

“It’s extremely hard enough for non-profits to raise money as it is in this challenging economy, and most funds are given around Christmas time, so CalendarLink is a highly-efficient and no-cost method for non-profits to raise funds all year long,” Conover adds.

CalendarLink isn’t Conover’s first foray into community service. In 2009, he was one of three recipients of the Paul Ecke Community Hero Award, for his fundraising efforts with Encinitas (CA) Rotary and Hand in Hand Schools, an organization that forges ties between Palestinian and Israeli children.

The popular ocean-advocacy non-profit Surfrider Foundation sells their calendars on CalendarLink as well. It was Conover’s idea to establish local Surfrider chapters and in 1990, he helped form the first chapter (San Diego).

Conover served on Surfrider’s National Board during the organization’s infancy in the early ’90s.

He and his partner in Tidelines, Peter Curry, were instrumental in fundraising for sand replenishment projects at local beaches.

The ‘ReSANDiego Project’ that Conover and Curry created, in 1997, helped secure $10 million in funding from SANDAG (San Diego County Association of Governments).

With dozens of custom calendar competitors on the market, Tidelines has created a niche by allowing surfers, boaters, and other marine-photography lovers to create a custom calendar with tide information and sine waves from over 3,500 locations from Seattle to San Diego, to Maine, Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, all the way down to Miami, and even Australia.

Tidelines also allows for-profits and professional or budding photographers and artists to sell their own custom calendars.

“You don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy or make your own Tidelines calendar,” says Curry, Conover’s business partner since 1990.

“Anyone can make their own personal calendar and have important dates printed on the calendar, with or without the tides,” he adds.

Tidelines has recently partnered with Surfer, Snowboarder, Bike, and Lowrider Magazines to produce custom calendars for each respective magazine.

Despite the glut of do-it-yourself calendar companies, many of them much larger, Tidelines has managed to offer a unique product in the saturated calendar market while at the same time empowering non-profits.

That’s something to be stoked about.

Perhaps Ruehle should learn just a little more about all the things the Auditor's Office *does* do,Read More before whining and complaining about all of the things it doesn't. http://www.cityauditorlauradoud.com/office-of-the-auditor.shtml Beyond routinely identifying many areas of waste, fraud, and abuse in City government, the Auditor's office conducts a great deal of non audit-related services each year. Ruehle's comments seem to connote a belief that City Auditor Doud is somehow responsible for investigating and reporting on every bad decision the Council makes or every instance of questionable affiliation found throughout City government. She is not and even if she were, Long Beach taxpayers do not provide her with sufficient resources to do so. Despite that Ms. Doud is, herself, a citywide elected official, and despite her office's consistently excellent work-product, she can only fact-find and report her findings. Beyond her own office, she has no authority to mandate changes in the way other City officials conduct the people's business. Since her initial election in 2006, Ms. Doud's office has uncovered -and reported upon- millions and millions of dollars worth of fraud, waste, and abuse in City government. That's not sufficient for Ruehle who, despite all his complaints, will never consider running for that office himself and showing us all how much better *he* could do.

"...this article is saying that the fact that the city of Long Beach extorts millions ofRead More dollars from its residents in the form of RIDICULOUS parking tickets and charges outrageous fines for them is to be applauded?" No. There is actually nothing in this article that says that but please enjoy these lovely parting gifts.

What has City Auditor Laura Doud done since her re-election other than support anything wanted byRead More Foster & Delong. Maybe people should ask: 1. Why didn't Doud audit the city's transaction where city owned valuable port property was exchanged for swamp land? There certainly was enough controversy about the value of each asset. Wasn't it her job as the taxpayer's representative to look into it? 2. Why didn't Doud audit the amount of taxpayer's money used to support the 2nd & PCH project and the Home Depot project before that. The city was supposed to be compensated by the Developers for ALL of their costs, including meeting costs. However, that is NOT what happened. Millions of taxpayer's dollars where gifted to certain politically connected developers. 3. Why hasn't Doud audited the $1 dollar per year no-bid contracts of valuable city taxpayer owned ocean front property to the Long Beach Yacht Club, Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and other exclusive members only clubs for the wealthy and politically connected do determine what the value of an alternative use might be? 4. Why hasn't Doud audited the exclusive, no-bid, for-profit lease of city owned waterfront property to Steve Conley's and John Hancock's BANCAP company that has made those two men tremendously wealthy at the expense of Long Beach taxpayers? Doud started out with a bang when first elected. Since then, she has been a crony for anything Foster and DeLong related.
