Monday Essentials: Long Beach Becomes a Two-Newspaper Town

Here are some quick-starts for the week on this fine Monday morning, Belmont Shore-Naples.

1.      Today, Long Beach residents will get a second daily newspaper with the Long Beach Register. This is seen by some in the media industry as strange in the age of dwindling circulations and media layoffs, The Associated Press reported.

3.      Long Beach unemployment rate rose slightly in July, according to the state Employment Development Department. At nearly 12 percent, Long Beach’s rate is still higher than the state's average.

4.      The Orange Jam or Bridge Bash finished ahead of schedule and the San Diego Freeway reopened much earlier than expected. The freeway was fully reopened at around 3 p.m. How did you ride out the Bridge Bash?

5.      Long Beach’s Southern California Edison customers may see some refund. A Canadian power company settled with the state for its part in the 2000-2001 energy crisis in California. Powerex agreed to pay $750 to settle claims that it bought and resold powers to California at exorbitant prices.
