Congress Candidates Answered Questions for 2 Hours

7 of 9 candidates vying for the 47th Congressional seat representing Long Beach, Rossmoor, Los Alamitos and other cities took the public's questions on the deficit, education and jobs.

Patch was at Thursday night's congressional candidates forum hosted by the Belmont Heights Community Association at Rogers Middle School, and will bring you details by the weekend. As promised, we submitted the questions readers asked of the candidates, and some of them were asked and answered. The Rogers Auditorium forum was well attended, especially in the first hour of the event, hosted by the Belmont Heights Community Association and conducted by the League of Women Voters. The questions posed by audience members to the 47th District candidates were specific and wide-ranging. What would each candidate do to create jobs? 47th Congressional Candidates Forum Tonight

Most or all of the candidates are expected at the Rogers Middle School Auditorium.

The Belmont Heights Community Association and the League of Women Voters of Long Beach will be hosting a candidate’s forum Thursday for the re-districted 47th Congressional District. Seven of the eight candidates are planning to attend the event, including Gary DeLong, Alan Lowenthal, Steve Kuykendall and Jay Shah. The 47th District covers large segments of Long Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, parts of Orange County and Catalina Island. The top two vote-getters in the June 5 primary election will advance to the Nov. 6 general election regardless of party preference or whether one candidate receives a majority of votes in the primary. Congressional Candidates Step Up Spending

In the 47th District Congressional race, candidates significantly increased their fundraising and spending as the June primary approaches.

In the eight-way race for the new 47th District Congressional seat, Republican candidate Gary DeLong has raised the most money – $572,501 –nearly $200,000 more than the next highest fundraiser, Democratic opponent Alan Lowenthal, according to the latest figures. DeLong, a Long Beach City Council member and businessman, and Lowenthal, a California State Senator and college professor, are running along with six others to represent Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and Long Beach. Lowenthal being the most recognizeable name-state senator, former state assemblyman and Long Beach Councilman-is the presumed frontrunner expected to face the Republican winner of the June primary, observers say. Candidates for 47th Congressional District Reveal War Chests

Long Beach City Councilmember Gary DeLong has a fundraising lead in the 8-way race for the seat in the House that will represent portions Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and portions of Long Beach.

Editor's Note: These figures are based on federal reporting current as of 6:30 p.m. April 13. Long Beach Campaign Treasurer Embezzled $7M

Kinde Durkee pleads to mail fraud, says she stole funds from Democrat Sen. Feinstein and Southland Congresswomen Loretta and Linda Sanchez to spend on business, Long Beach home.

A Long Beach woman who oversaw finances for many Democratic political leaders, including Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Southland congresswomen Loretta and Linda Sanchez and Assemblyman Jose Solorio, has pleaded guilty to five counts of mail fraud related to a multimillion-dollar embezzlement scheme. Kinde Durkee admitted Friday in the plea agreement that her scheme to shuffle around clients' money to pay her personal and business expenses, then pay back embezzled money to other clients she stole from, cost the victims more than $7 million, according to Lauren Horwood, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office in Sacramento. Four Democrats and four Republicans were certified by the California Secretary of State's office Thursday as candidates who will appear on the June 5 ballot to represent the 47th Congressional District. The district includes Long Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor and stretches into Orange County and also includes Catalina Island. As the June 5 primary election campaigns begin to kick into gear for the new 47th Congressional District, the party forums and luncheons have begun. Sometimes there are too many candidates to speak at any length about important and often complex local issues. As the election nears Patch will interview each candidate (willing) about biographical information and where they stand on important concerns.
