Long Beach-L.A. Ports Anchor County's Trade Hike

Regional Economic Development Corp. forecasts an 11% trade increase in L.A. County, 4% - 5% increase in trade throughout the U.S., both linked to the shipping basin, the country's largest.

Los Angeles County continued to be a major center of international trade in 2011, handling $386 billion worth of two-way commerce, an 11.5 percent increase over the previous year, according to a report released Wednesday. The report by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp. also predicted that international trade throughout the United States would grow by 4 to 5 percent this year and next year. ``Los Angeles County remains a globally competitive trade destination and has shown growth in several key areas over the past year,'' said Robert Kleinhenz, chief economist with LAEDC's Kyser Center for Economic Research. ``The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach stand out as the largest container shipping port complex in the United States, …

Construction Begins on ‘Port of the Future’

Two companies forge a long-term pact in the $4.6 billion project in the Long Beach side of harbor.

A new project is underway to modernize the Middle Harbor into what is promised to be one of the greenest and most advanced terminals in North America. Two companies, Hong Kong-based Orient Overseas Container Lines and Long Beach Container Terminal LLC, along with Port officials, gathered in celebration Monday of the $1.2 billion portion of the 40-year project that will eventually cost $4.6 billion. The long-term pact between the two container companies with the Port is being billed not only as an investment in green technology, but in trade and jobs as well. As part of the largest port complex in America, the Port of Long Beach already sees more than $150 billion worth of trade each year. The expansion of two smaller facilities into a …

2nd + PCH Project Will Seek to Stay in Zoning

The long-controversial proposal to build a 9-story hotel, condos and retail-restaurants was denied in December, but property owners had said they'd try again. They've now sought city OK for something already allowed.

The years-long effort to turn the corner of 2nd and PCH into a hotel-condo-shopping and dining center has apparently been called off, in its place a request by land owners to build within zoning. Tom Modica, the city's director of Government and Strategic Affairs, said the following in an email Tuesday night: ""An application for conceptual site plan review has been received for the Seaport Marina Hotel site for retail development." The land in question, at the southwest corner, holds a large but low-slung pink hotel that once was graced by Elvis Presley but has not been modernized in recent years, perhaps awaiting a potential tear-down. The Long Beach hotel has been the backdrop of more than a few scenes in the Showtime series, "Dexter," …

No, but if you pay them off enough any rule can be changed. I think the city should trade Lin the Marina Pacifica Shopping Center and let him go wild with that mess. Stroll & Savor Wednesday: See You There!

Come sample food from Belmont Shore's restaurants and meet the Patch team in green.

Some of my favorite Belmont Shore evenings of the year are our Stroll & Savor nights dining along Second Street, where most every restaurant dishes out food for smaller servings and prices. Wednesday and Thursday night, the tradition continues with more than 50 businesses serving up chow along Second Street in the heart of Belmont Shore. This year's two-night event, hosted by the Belmont Shore Business Assn.,will feature a few new arrivals to sample. The deal: you buy a $10 book of 12 tickets, and visit whichever retaurant you already love or have been dying to try. (Last year, I tried Riley's food for the first time and discovered their yummy salads, and a pasta dish, for under $12, and  they were entree size). Buying the tickets in …

Regional Economic Forecast: Cautious Slow Growth

Professors at Cal State Long Beach this week hosted the 18th annual overview of 5 counties, concluding that there has been progress in the past year.

Long Beach, and Southern California, jobs grew in 2011 for the first time since the 2007 economic downturn that rocked the country, and while the pace lags behind historical trajectories, there is cause for measured optimism, experts said this week. At Cal State Long Beach's 18th Annual Regional Economic Forecast, professors told a paying audience that while not remarkable, five Southern California counties have seen a recovery. Orange County was hit the earliest by the housing bubble's burst, and the experts said it's recovery has come soonest. Dr. Lisa Grobar, economics professor and director of the economic forecast, and Dr. Joseph Magaddino, CSULB professor emeritus, interpreted data on trade, housing, employment and income to compile …

Solid Gold Pet Food Maker Issues Voluntary Recall

The order comes after a national scare, in which 14 people were infected with a strain of Salmonella across nine states.

Following a national dog food recall Tuesday, a California based pet food manufacturer, Solid Gold Health Products for Pets, Inc., also issued a  recall for some of its products. The original recall order was issued by Diamond Pet Foods after the Centers for Disease Control reportedly linked the contamination to several brands of dog food produced at their Gaston, SC. plant. A total of 14 individuals were infected with an outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis in nine states, according to the CDC. At least 12 brands of dry dog food are impacted and only certain batches are being recalled on a voluntary basis. New Business in the Marketplace: The Veggie Grill

It's not open yet, but we'll be checking out The Veggie Grill, which says it's opening soon in Chopstix restaurant's former space beside Trader Joe's.

This new business, The Veggie Grill, is coming soon in the Marketplace. Have you heard about it? The website says it has locations in Southern California and Oregon, and it's been rated #1 new restaurant in O.C. by the Orange County Register, and Restaurant of the Year by VegNews. And given its location near the corner pocket of the Marketplace occupied by Neckter Juice Bar and Roots Gourmet, beside Trader Joe's, it looks like a concentration of mutually beneficial businesses. To read more about it, check the Facebook page.

Cacao Snacks Recalled for E. Coli

FunFresh Foods warns of possible contamination in its World Berries brand product.

An Orange County-based company is recalling packages of organic cacao nib snack food because of possible bacterial contamination, the firm announced Sunday. The World Berries brand snack food may be contaminated with a virulent form of e. coli bacteria called O157:H7, which has been known to cause hemolytic uremic syndrome in a small percentage of people. For the vast majority, the bacteria causes a virulent form of diarrhea. The cacao nibs were sold in 6-ounce packages. About 500 packages were distributed, and 263 of those have already been pulled from shelves for destruction. The packages were distributed April 12-17 to retail stores in California and 29 other states. The product is sold under a World Berries brand name, with UPC code …
