Giant Basking Shark Basks Off the Coast

Sunday charter boats including Long Beach's Christopher spot it along with whales.

A giant basking shark, the second largest fish after the whale Shark, was spotted today off the Southern California coast by the captains of several whale watching charters. While their size may strike fear in an observer, they are said to be docile creatures.

One of those observation boats about 7 miles from Long Beach at midday was the 3/4 day boat Victory out of Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach. "It was big," Captain Mike Blue reported. "I am guessing somewhere between 18-25 feet."

The Christopher out of Harbor Breeze Cruises in Long Beach arrived on scene and treated their passengers to the incredible sight.
